Crochet marigold

These flowers were requested by a friend of mine.  I did check out a few patterns, but they somehow did not match up with what I had in mind.  So I worked to create my own pattern.  It's such a simple pattern.  The flower and the stem are worked separately and then put together in a unique way.

Difficulty level

Beginner/Intermediate

Materials

Yarn: 100% acrylic
Hook: 5.00mm

Stitches

ST - Slip Stitch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFk-fdAowbY)
SC - Single Crochet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOlQXn8JWWM)
DC - Double Crochet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGDxroGp0WY)
SC2TOG - SC two together or SC Decrease (https://youtu.be/6jUQXXJUrhA)

Pattern

Flower: I have used bright yellow yarn for the flower.
1) Create a magic circle, keep it loose and leave a tail
2) Stitch 70 DCs into the magic circle
3) Pull tightly onto the tail of the magic circle as tightly as possible so the middle hole is very small and the DCs ruffle to look like the marigold petals.
4) Tie the loose ends.  The flower part is done.

Stem: This part is made separately, which gives it a more realistic look.  It looks similar to the stem when all the petals of a marigold are removed.  I have used green yarn for this part.
1) Start with 3 chains and join them to form a loop.
2) Stitch 10 SC into the chain loop. Join to the first SC.
3) Stitch 1SC into each SC of previous loop.  Join to the first SC.
4). Reduction round - Stitch 1 SC into the first stitch of previous round.  Now reduce by doing a SC2tog on next two stitches.  Again SC in the next stitch and SC2tog in the 2 stitches after that.  Continue like this and join the first SC.  You should have 5 stitches.
5) This is the last round.  We will stitch all the previous stitches together.  To do this loop the hook through all previous stitches without pulling through.  At the end pull through all the loops at once.
6) Tie off.

Below find a picture of the flower and stem separately before putting them together.

Final Step
Next step is to complete the flower.  Take the stem and flower.  Face the top of the flower towards you and insert the end of the stem through the middle of the flower.  Adjust if so the stem is partly on both sides of the flower.  You can choose to leave it as is if it is a tight fit or sew them together.  You can also use glue to stick them together.  For me, I just left it as is!

Fancy beanie

I made this fancy beanie for a very close neighbor.  It's very easy but looks very fancy.  The top part is different than a normal beanie and has a flowery pattern to it, making it look more fancy and beautiful.  The pattern is a medium adult size.

Difficulty level

Beginner/Intermediate

Materials

Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver
Hook: 5.5mm

Stitches
ST - Slip Stitch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFk-fdAowbY)
SC - Single Crochet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOlQXn8JWWM)
DC - Double Crochet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGDxroGp0WY)
Cluster Stitch - 3 DC clusters (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLWt5Y29l7E)

Pattern

Round 1: Create magic ring and start with 3 chains which counts as 1 DC.  Crochet 11 more DCs into the magic ring.  Join at the top of the initial 3 chains.

Round 2: Start with chain 4 (which counts as 1DC + 1 chain), put 1 DC in next stitch, then 1 Chain.  Continue with 1 DC, 1 chain in all stitches of previous row.  Join at the top of the initial 3 chains.

Round 3: ST to the next chain space, and start with 3 chain (which counts as 1 DC), and stitch 2  more DCs to create a cluster stitch (3dc clustered together).  Chain 2.  Now create another cluster stitch (3DCs together) in the next chain space.  Continue with 2 chain and a cluster stitch in each chain space of previous row. (Reference for cluster stitch in links above).  Join at the top of the initial 3 chains.

Round 4: ST to the first chain space of previous row.  Start with 4 chain (which counts as 1DC + 1 chain) and 1 DC into the same chain space.  Now crochet 1 Chain and put 1 DC on top of the cluster stitch of previous row.  Then 1 Chain 1 DC 1 Chain 1 DC into the next chain space.  Continue this pattern around, so we have a row of alternate DC and chain stitches around.  Join at the top of the initial 3 chains.

Round 5: ST to the first chain space of previous row.  Starting with 3 Chains, create a cluster stitch.  Chain 2 , and skip 2 DCs, create another cluster in the chain space after skipping 2 DCs.  Continue to create these clusters in the chain spaces after every 2 DCs.  Join at the top of the initial 3 chains.

Round 6:  Start at the top of the cluster, where you joined.  Start with 4 chain (Which counts as 1 SC + 3 chains), now join on top of the next cluster with SC.  Chain 3 and join on the top of the next cluster with SC.  Continue around, joining 3 chains with SC on top of each cluster.  Join at the top of the first cluster.

Round 7:  ST into the first 3 chain loop of the previous row.  Start with chain 3 + 2 DCs in the 3 chain space of previous row. Crochet 3 DC in each of the 3 chain spaces of the previous row.  Join at the top of the initial 3 chains.  This row ends the flowery part of the beanie.  From here onwards we will work to increase the height of the beanie.

Round 8 - 13: Start with chain 3 and crochet 1 DC in each of the stitches in the  previous row.  This is just increasing the height of the beanie.

Round 14- 15: Start with chain 1 and crochet 1 SC in each of the stitches in the  previous row.  This will give the beanie a firm edging.

Hooded Blanket with detached flower

This cute blanket was made for a co-worker for her baby shower.  It is an adorable 30 in x 30in swaddle blanket with hood and removable flower.  The removable flower can be used as is or attached to any other part of the blanket.  It can be also used as a button after the baby is wrapped.  The blanket is a simple granny square blanket.

Difficulty level

Beginner/Intermediate

Materials

Yarn: 100% acrylic
Hook: 5.75mm
1 big button

Stitches

ST - Slip Stitch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFk-fdAowbY)
SC - Single Crochet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOlQXn8JWWM)
DC - Double Crochet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGDxroGp0WY)

Pattern

Blanket - For the blanket, you can choose whatever colors you want, or it can even be all in the same color.  This blanket is worked in rounds.
1) Start with 4 chain and join to form a circle.
2) ST into the circle.   Start with 3 chain  which counts as first DC.  2 DCs in the circle space and Chain 2.  (3 DC + 2 Chain) - 3 more times and join at the top of the first 3 chain.
3) ST to next chain space.  Start with 3 chain which counts as first DC.  2 DCs in the same space. Chain 2, then 3 DC in the same chain space.  ( Chain 1, then 3 DC in the next chain space.  2 chain then 3 DC in same chain space.) - repeat 3 times.  Chain 1 and join at the top of the first 3 chain.
4) Continue step 3 by increasing 3 DC clusters by 1 for each side in every round.  For example the next round will be:  ST to next chain space.  Start with 3 Chain which counts as first DC.  2 DCs in the same space. Chain 2, then 3 DC in the same chain space.  ( Chain 1, then 3 DC in the next chain space.  Chain 1, then 3 DC in the next chain space.  2 chain then 3 DC in same chain space.) - repeat 3 times.  Chain 1 and join at the top of the first 3 chain.

NOTE: Make the blanket as big as you want to by increasing the rounds.  I have made 6 rounds of white, then 5 rounds with variegated red/pink yarn, then 5 rounds of white then 5 rounds of purple.

You can refer to any tutorial for simple granny square blanket for this part of the pattern.  I will link a pattern below.

Hood - The hood is basically a half granny square.  This half granny square is not worked in rounds.  Instead it is worked back and forth by turning the work.

1) Start with 4 chain and join to form a circle.
2) ST into the circle.  Start with 4 chain.  Stitch 3 DCs into the circle.  Chain 2.  3 DCs in the circle space. 1 chain 1 DC into the same circle space.
3) Start with 4 chain.  Turn the work.  Stitch 3 DCs in the chain space.  Chain 1.  Stitch 3 DCs + 2 chain + 3DCs in the next space.  Ch1 and 3 DCs in the last chain space. 1 Chain 1 DC into the same chain space.
4) Continue step 3 by increasing 3 DC clusters by 1 for each side of the triangle in every round.  For example the next round will be: 4 chain.  Turn the work.  Stitch 3 DCs into the chain space.  Chain 1.  3 DCs in the next chain space. Chain 1. 3 DCs 2 chain 3 DCs into the next space.  Chain 1, 3 DCs in the next chain space. 1 Chain 3DC into the next space.  1 Chain 1 DC into the same space.
Increase the hood by as many rows as required.  I have increased to 7 rows.
5) At the end of increase attach the hood to the blanket using slip stitches.

Blanket border - The border adds a beautiful touch to the blanket. and makes it really pop.  I have made the border with white yarn.

1) Attach the white yarn where the bottom corner of the hood meets the blanket.  2 SC in each of the chain spaces from the granny square and 1 SC into the DCs.  Work around the main blanket which will bring you up to the bottom of the hood.  Then work across the bottom of the hood.
2) Now work the scalloped edge.  For the scalloped edge, Stitch 6 DCs into the 3rd stitch from the hook.  Leave 2 stitches and join.  Again 6 DC into the 3rd stitch from the hook.  Lease 2 stitches and join.  Work around the main blanket which will bring you up to the bottom of the hood.  Then work across the bottom of the hood.

Flower - For the flower, use any flower tutorial online (Youtube has great resources, and I have linked one tutorial below). After creating the flower, do not cut off the yarn, instead, continue to create a small chain of 12 and at the end attach a button to the yarn. This button should fit into the middle of the flower. This button can be used to close the loop and attach the flower to the blanket.  Instead of a flower, you can use any applique pattern.

Elegant Infinity scarf with detachable flower

This infinity scarf was made for my son's teacher for teacher's appreciation week.  It is a very simple but elegant pattern.  It worked up really fast, and the variegated yarn looks very beautiful.  Just be aware that this yarn does not lend very well to frogging as it tends to get snagged.  This pattern can be used with any worsted weight yarn.

Difficulty level

Beginner/Intermediate

Materials

Yarn: Lionsbrand Scarfie
Hook: 6.75mm/4.00mm
1 big button

Stitches

SC - Single Crochet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOlQXn8JWWM)
DC - Double Crochet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGDxroGp0WY)

Pattern

Scarf - made with 6.75mm hook:
1) Chain 22
2) Chain 3 for first DC, DC into next stitch.
(Chain 2, Skip 2 stiches and 2DC into next two stitches)* Continue till end. You should have 6 sets of 2 DCS with 2 chain in between.
3) Again continue the same pattern starting with Chain 3 and turn for each row.
I made it around 62 inches long and joined it on top. If you do not want to wear it as a normal scarf, do not join the two ends.

Flower - made with 4mm hook for tighter stitches:
For the flower, use any flower tutorial online (Youtube has great resources, and I have linked one tutorial below). After creating the flower, do not cut off the yarn, instead, continue to create a small chain of 12 and at the end attach a button to the yarn. This button should fit into the middle of the flower. This button can be used to close the loop and attach the flower to the scarf.

Introduction

That's me rocking my favorite beanie!
It's the Malia beanie from Little Monkey's Crochet

I am Poushali.  Originally from India, we moved to USA in the year 2016.  I have spent part of my childhood in Egypt, and the later part of my teenage years in India.  I love traveling, and have visited many places, including a lot of the Middle East, China, India, Thailand and now multiple places in USA.

I have always been very much into Fine Arts, Music, Drama, Woodwork, Pottery etc.  I learnt to crochet when I was quite small from my grandmother, and she gifted me her first crochet hook.  Not having access to any patterns, I would create my own mini doilies from any yarn I could find.  Also I loved creating my own doll clothes.  Creating something new and amazing always fascinated me!

I have done my Bachelors and Masters in Technology in Computers, and professionally work as a Software Engineer.  My hobbies help me balance out my work and life, and have helped me overcome a lot of stress and anxiety about work and life in general.  At the end of the day, I love to sit with my crafting and forget about the world.

Few years back, I decided to invest quality time towards crafting, instead of doing it as a whim.  I started crocheting and learning many different techniques and styles, creating many different things such as bags, baskets, clothing, jewelry, the world was my oyster, and with a ball of yarn and a hook, I could create anything I pleased!  I was amazed at all the resources available online and all the talented and creative people out there who dedicate so much time and effort to create such beautiful things.

I am still a beginner, but would love to share my work and patterns with others.  Recently I have got a lot of requests to share my work, so here goes.  Hope through this platform I can share and learn more from all of you!
