Slouchy crochet beret

I was inspired to make this slouchy Beret, because I was looking to make something different for a trip I was taking.  I got bored of the usual beanies, and decided to go for this Beret style.  But I also wanted it more slouchy.  I love how it turned out and I wear this hat so often now!

When making this hat, it may start to get a bit wavy in the increase rows, but things should settle down, once the decrease rows come into play.

I have added ways to make it in two different sizes (Small and large) and also suggested how to change it based on the kind of hold you prefer for your forehead.

Hook: 5.5mm for small size / 5.75mm for large size

Important Notes

• Chain spaces of previous row are not considered as a stitch.  If you need to work into a chain space of previous row, it would be mentioned as such explicitly.  Otherwise please work only into the next or previous stitch as mentioned.
• Round repeats are highlighted and [enclosed in braces].
• Some rounds may not have full repeats.
• The design may look wavy till the decrease rounds, after which it should become more even all around.

Pattern

Round 1  CH 4 and join into the first CH with a SL ST to form a circle

Round 2  CH 3 which is considered as the first DC.  [DC into the circle.]- Repeat 7 times.  Join to the first DC with a SL ST.  (Stitch count for this round: 8 DCs)

Round 3  CH 3 which is considered as the first DC.  DC in the same stitch again.  [2 DC into the next stitch]- Repeat 7 times.  Join to the first DC with a SL ST.  (Stitch count for this round: 16 DCs)

Round 4   SL ST into the first post of the previous row.  FPSC into each of the stitches on the previous row.  Join to the first FPSC with a SL ST.  (Stitch count for this round: 16 FPSCs)

Round 5   In this round we will work on the stitches made in round 3.  SL ST into the first stitch of Round 3.  CH 3 which is considered as the first DC.  CH 2.  CS6 (6 DC cluster) into the next stitch.  CH 2. [DC into the next stitch.  Chain 2.  CS6 into the next stitch.  CH 2]-Repeat 7 times.   Join to the first DC with a SL ST.  (Stitch count for this round: 8 DCs + 8 CS6 + 32 CHs)

Round 6   SL ST into the next CH 2 space.  CH 3 which is considered as the first DC.  3DC into the same CH 2 space.  DC in the CS6 in between. 4 DC into the next CH 2 space.  [4 DC into the next CH 2 space. DC in the CS6 in between.  4 DC into the next CH 2 space.] - Repeat 7 times.  Join to the first DC with a SL ST.  (Stitch count for this round: 72 DCs)

Round 7   SL ST into the first post of the previous row.  FPSC into each of the stitches on the previous row.  Join to the first FPSC with a SL ST.  (Stitch count for this round: 72 FPSCs)

Round 8   In this round we will work on the stitches made in round 6.  SL ST into the first stitch of Round 6.  CH 3 which is considered as the first DC.  CH 2.  Skip 1 stitch.  CS6 (6 DC cluster) into the next stitch.  CH 2.  Skip 1 stitch.[DC into the next stitch.  CH 2.  Skip 1 stitch. CS6 into the next stitch.  CH 2.  Skip 1 stitch. ]-Repeat 17 times.   Join to the first DC with a SL ST.  (Stitch count for this round: 18 DCs + 18 CS6 + 72 CHs)

Round 9   SL ST into the next CH 2 space.  CH 3 which is considered as the first DC.  2DC into the same CH 2 space. Skip the CS6 in between. 3 DC into the next CH 2 space.  [3 DC into the next CH 2 space.  Skip the CS6 in between.  3 DC into the next CH 2 space.] - Repeat 17 times.  Join to the first DC with a SL ST.  (Stitch count for this round: 108 DCs)

Round 10   SL ST into the first post of the previous row.  FPSC into each of the stitches on the previous row.  Join to the first FPSC with a SL ST.  (Stitch count for this round: 108 FPSCs)

Round 11    In this round we will work on the stitches made in round 9.  SL ST into the first stitch of Round 9.  CH 3 which is considered as the first DC.  CH 2.  Skip 1 stitch.  CS6 (6 DC cluster) into the next stitch.  CH 2.  Skip 1 stitch.[DC into the next stitch.  Chain 2.  Skip 1 stitch. CS6 into the next stitch.  CH 2.  Skip 1 stitch. ]-Repeat 26 times.   Join to the first DC with a SL ST.  (Stitch count for this round: 27 DCs + 27 CS6 + 108 CHs)

Round 12    SL ST into the next CH 2 space.  CH 3 which is considered as the first DC.  DC into the same CH 2 space.  DC on top of the CS6 in between. 2 DC into the next CH 2 space.  [2 DC into the next CH 2 space. DC on top of the CS6 in between.  2 DC into the next CH 2 space.] - Repeat 26 times.  Join to the first DC with a SL ST.  (Stitch count for this round: 135 DCs)

Rounds 13 & 14   (Only for large size) CH 3 which is considered as the first DC.   [DC into the next stitch.] - Repeat around. (Stitch count for this round: 135 DCs)

Rounds 15 - 19  This is a decrease round.  CH 3 which is considered as the first DC.  DC into the next 4 stitches.  DC2TOG next two stitches.  [DC into next 5 stitches.  DC2TOG next two stitches] - Repeat around. This round may not have full repeats.   Join to the first DC with a SL ST.

Round 20 - 21 CH 3 which is considered as the first DC.  [DC into next stitch] - Repeat around.  Join to the first DC with a SL ST.

Round 22   For looser fit on the forehead / recommended for large size- CH 1.  SC in the first stitch of previous round.  SC in the same stitch again.  [2SC in next stitch] - Repeat around.  Join to the first SC with a SL ST.

For medium fit on the forehead- CH 1. SC in the first stitch of previous round.  [SC in next stitch] - Repeat around.  Join to the first SC with a SL ST.

For tighter fit on the forehead / recommended for small size - CH 1.  SC in the first stitch of previous round.  SC in the next 4 stitches.  SC2TOG next 2 stitches.  [SC in next 5 stitches.  SC2TOG next 2 stitches] - Repeat around.This round may not have full repeats.  Join to the first SC with a SL ST.

Round 23   CH1.  SC in the first stitch of previous round.  [SC in next stitch] - Repeat around.  Join to the first SC with a SL ST.

You are all done! Now you can cut the thread and weave in the ends!    

Pattern Testing 

I had a wonderful group of testers for this pattern.  I got lots of great feedback, including the fact that some people like a tighter hold for the forehead while others prefer a more relaxed hold.  This is why I modified Row 22 to cater to a wider audience.

Fancy beanie

I made this fancy beanie for a very close neighbor.  It's very easy but looks very fancy.  The top part is different than a normal beanie and has a flowery pattern to it, making it look more fancy and beautiful.  The pattern is a medium adult size.

Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver
Hook: 5.5mm

Pattern
Round 1: Create magic ring and start with 3 chains which counts as 1 DC.  Crochet 11 more DCs into the magic ring.  Join at the top of the initial 3 chains.

Round 2: Start with chain 4 (which counts as 1DC + 1 chain), put 1 DC in next stitch, then 1 Chain.  Continue with 1 DC, 1 chain in all stitches of previous row.  Join at the top of the initial 3 chains.

Round 3: ST to the next chain space, and start with 3 chain (which counts as 1 DC), and stitch 2  more DCs to create a cluster stitch (3dc clustered together).  Chain 2.  Now create another cluster stitch (3DCs together) in the next chain space.  Continue with 2 chain and a cluster stitch in each chain space of previous row. (Reference for cluster stitch in links above).  Join at the top of the initial 3 chains.

Round 4: ST to the first chain space of previous row.  Start with 4 chain (which counts as 1DC + 1 chain) and 1 DC into the same chain space.  Now crochet 1 Chain and put 1 DC on top of the cluster stitch of previous row.  Then 1 Chain 1 DC 1 Chain 1 DC into the next chain space.  Continue this pattern around, so we have a row of alternate DC and chain stitches around.  Join at the top of the initial 3 chains.

Round 5: ST to the first chain space of previous row.  Starting with 3 Chains, create a cluster stitch.  Chain 2 , and skip 2 DCs, create another cluster in the chain space after skipping 2 DCs.  Continue to create these clusters in the chain spaces after every 2 DCs.  Join at the top of the initial 3 chains.

Round 6:  Start at the top of the cluster, where you joined.  Start with 4 chain (Which counts as 1 SC + 3 chains), now join on top of the next cluster with SC.  Chain 3 and join on the top of the next cluster with SC.  Continue around, joining 3 chains with SC on top of each cluster.  Join at the top of the first cluster.

Round 7:  ST into the first 3 chain loop of the previous row.  Start with chain 3 + 2 DCs in the 3 chain space of previous row. Crochet 3 DC in each of the 3 chain spaces of the previous row.  Join at the top of the initial 3 chains.  This row ends the flowery part of the beanie.  From here onwards we will work to increase the height of the beanie.

Round 8 - 13: Start with chain 3 and crochet 1 DC in each of the stitches in the  previous row.  This is just increasing the height of the beanie.

Round 14- 15: Start with chain 1 and crochet 1 SC in each of the stitches in the  previous row.  This will give the beanie a firm edging.
