Hooded Blanket with detached flower

This cute blanket was made for a co-worker for her baby shower.  It is an adorable 30 in x 30in swaddle blanket with hood and removable flower.  The removable flower can be used as is or attached to any other part of the blanket.  It can be also used as a button after the baby is wrapped.  The blanket is a simple granny square blanket.

Pattern

Blanket - For the blanket, you can choose whatever colors you want, or it can even be all in the same color.  This blanket is worked in rounds.
1) Start with 4 chain and join to form a circle.
2) ST into the circle.   Start with 3 chain  which counts as first DC.  2 DCs in the circle space and Chain 2.  (3 DC + 2 Chain) - 3 more times and join at the top of the first 3 chain.
3) ST to next chain space.  Start with 3 chain which counts as first DC.  2 DCs in the same space. Chain 2, then 3 DC in the same chain space.  ( Chain 1, then 3 DC in the next chain space.  2 chain then 3 DC in same chain space.) - repeat 3 times.  Chain 1 and join at the top of the first 3 chain.
4) Continue step 3 by increasing 3 DC clusters by 1 for each side in every round.  For example the next round will be:  ST to next chain space.  Start with 3 Chain which counts as first DC.  2 DCs in the same space. Chain 2, then 3 DC in the same chain space.  ( Chain 1, then 3 DC in the next chain space.  Chain 1, then 3 DC in the next chain space.  2 chain then 3 DC in same chain space.) - repeat 3 times.  Chain 1 and join at the top of the first 3 chain.

NOTE: Make the blanket as big as you want to by increasing the rounds.  I have made 6 rounds of white, then 5 rounds with variegated red/pink yarn, then 5 rounds of white then 5 rounds of purple.

You can refer to any tutorial for simple granny square blanket for this part of the pattern.  I will link a pattern below.

Hood - The hood is basically a half granny square.  This half granny square is not worked in rounds.  Instead it is worked back and forth by turning the work.

1) Start with 4 chain and join to form a circle.
2) ST into the circle.  Start with 4 chain.  Stitch 3 DCs into the circle.  Chain 2.  3 DCs in the circle space. 1 chain 1 DC into the same circle space.
3) Start with 4 chain.  Turn the work.  Stitch 3 DCs in the chain space.  Chain 1.  Stitch 3 DCs + 2 chain + 3DCs in the next space.  Ch1 and 3 DCs in the last chain space. 1 Chain 1 DC into the same chain space.
4) Continue step 3 by increasing 3 DC clusters by 1 for each side of the triangle in every round.  For example the next round will be: 4 chain.  Turn the work.  Stitch 3 DCs into the chain space.  Chain 1.  3 DCs in the next chain space. Chain 1. 3 DCs 2 chain 3 DCs into the next space.  Chain 1, 3 DCs in the next chain space. 1 Chain 3DC into the next space.  1 Chain 1 DC into the same space.
Increase the hood by as many rows as required.  I have increased to 7 rows.
5) At the end of increase attach the hood to the blanket using slip stitches.

Blanket border - The border adds a beautiful touch to the blanket. and makes it really pop.  I have made the border with white yarn.

1) Attach the white yarn where the bottom corner of the hood meets the blanket.  2 SC in each of the chain spaces from the granny square and 1 SC into the DCs.  Work around the main blanket which will bring you up to the bottom of the hood.  Then work across the bottom of the hood.
2) Now work the scalloped edge.  For the scalloped edge, Stitch 6 DCs into the 3rd stitch from the hook.  Leave 2 stitches and join.  Again 6 DC into the 3rd stitch from the hook.  Lease 2 stitches and join.  Work around the main blanket which will bring you up to the bottom of the hood.  Then work across the bottom of the hood.

Flower - For the flower, use any flower tutorial online (Youtube has great resources, and I have linked one tutorial below). After creating the flower, do not cut off the yarn, instead, continue to create a small chain of 12 and at the end attach a button to the yarn. This button should fit into the middle of the flower. This button can be used to close the loop and attach the flower to the blanket.  Instead of a flower, you can use any applique pattern.
